4 solos at NIAD Art Center: Karen May, Saul Alegria, Erik Friedman, John Casey
Oakland artist John Casey is a natural character creator. Often his paintings and drawings include invented people with detailed clothing, sometimes backgrounds, and occasionally several folks interacting. In “How to Get a Head,” Casey narrows his focus to just head portraits: cut out head shapes from plywood, painted. These wall pieces are not pre-planned. Instead, he draws a variety of head shapes; some simple, some more elaborate, without a finished image in mind and then Casey loosely paints in the features in and let the portraits emerge through play.
